Music Curriculum
In this section you will find information specific to our Music Curriculum.
 
Children from Reception to Year 6 have timetabled music of 45-60 minutes every week within the classroom throughout the year, in order to consistently apply their knowledge and skills learnt through our George Fentham curriculum. Singing is at the heart of our curriculum and our daily life in school.
EYFS (Nursery and Reception) apply music through Development Matters, Birth to 5 Matters and Musical Development Matters to ensure they offer quality musical experiences to the children. Reception also use supplementary resources from Charanga.
Children in Key Stage 1 are currently taught Music through the Charanga scheme of work and Children in Key Stage 2 are taught Music through the Kapow scheme of work – both are spiral curriculums, reinforcing and repeating knowledge and skills,  giving all children the opportunity to embed what they have learnt and to build on them progressively, ensuring that our Year 6 children are Secondary ready.
Our curriculum has been carefully monitored and adapted to ensure progression across the school, and engaging and enjoyable musical experiences in curriculum lessons using singing and a range of tuned and un-tuned classroom instruments.
Curriculum progression also considers Year 4’s instrumental lessons, where we follow the Solihull Local Authority’s Whole Class Ensemble Teaching scheme, with every child having the opportunity to learn to play an instrument, as well as learning how to read and use musical notation.
Adaptive teaching is used throughout school to ensure inclusion and that the specific needs of every child are considered.

Curriculum Intent

​"Our curriculum teaches pupils to understand and explore how music is created, allowing them to perform, listen to and respond to a variety of musical styles and develop knowledge of music across a range of historical periods. The children develop an understanding of the interrelated dimensions of music: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notation. Our curriculum ensures that all children learn to sing and use their voices and have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument."
