Music Provision
In this section you will find information about how children are engaged in Music at George Fentham, both internally - through our curriculum - and externally - through Solihull Music Service opportunities.
Curriculum Provision
We use a resource called 'Charanga Music' to support the planning, teaching and learning of Music from Reception through to Year 2 and then 'Kapow' for Years 3, 5 and 6. Our curriculum has been adapted to cover all aspects of the 2014 National Curriculum, fostering a love of music and helping children to identify 'musical genres' (from Classical, Rock and Pop to Hip Hop and Rapping), learning about the vocabulary of music (rhythm, timbre, pitch, dynamics etc), exploring musical notation, listening to, appraising and composing in a range of musical styles, as well as using singing and tuned and un-tuned percussion to perform and create. In Year 4, children have the fabulous opportunity to experience learning a 'stringed' instrument as part of the Solihull Music Wider opportunities offer (see below). This year the children will be learning Ukelele. Emphasis is placed on making Music 'fun, engaging, dynamic and stimulating', along with getting children using instruments on a regular basis. Listening to different styles of music and learning about music history is an important part of our weekly assemblies, and class teachers also have the resources to use examples of music (for example, from the Model Music Curriculum) to underpin other subjects of the curriculum, such as Art or PE. |
External Providers/Opportunities
We have strong links with Solihull Music Hub, working closely with them to ensure that our children are given the opportunity to choose to learn a musical instrument (Strings, Woodwind, Brass, Percussion etc) and to perform within collaborative ensembles, should they wish. Our Year 4 are fortunate to benefit from the 'Wider Opportunities' provision, meaning that every child is given the chance to learn an instrument, free of charge (paid for through the generosity of the Fentham Trust) for 12 months. They are provided with the instrument, again free of charge, by Solihull Music Hub with the aim of encouraging them to continue their musical journey beyond Year 4. Many of our pupils do just that and have gone on to bigger and better things at Secondary School. At the end of the year, the pupils perform in a concert in front of a large audience to showcase all that they have learnt. |
Extra-Curricular Music
Throughout their learning journey at George Fentham, the children can have the opportunity to take part in a number of optional activities.
Opportunities over the years have ranged from: Young Voices at Resorts World Arena; performing with the world-renowned Kings Singers and Armonico Consort at Warwick Arts Centre; taking part in a rock band at the famous Cavern Club in Liverpool; performing in Carmina Burana with the Hampton Singers in Fentham Hall and again at Warwick Arts Centre; singing with the Junior Choir in the Touchwood Carol Competition, Christmas Fayre or Hampton Lunch Club; performances in Church; Key Stage 1 Recorder club; Solihull Sings in the Bushell Hall at Solihull School; workshops on Sound or the Schools Concerts at Birmingham Symphony Hall; musical story times in school with the musicians from the CBSO, to name just a few.
We also regularly have teachers from Solihull Music come into school to deliver assemblies about their instrument and to perform in front of the children.
