School Closure Provision:
As we begin what would have been the Summer Term, we wanted to write and let you know some more information about how we intend to move forward with finding that all important balance of ‘home-learning’ and ‘being at home’.
We have spent some time working out how best to do this and the staff are now going to be updating the Class Pages on our school website with suggested tasks, activities, videos and/or links to learning every week. These will be available from the Monday morning and are for you to access and complete when, and as, it suits. We are conscious that many of you are trying to balance working from home with caring for your children and so have deliberately chosen not to propose a rigid timetable or expectations of when work should be done. This, hopefully, provides you with the flexibility to respond to your child/ren’s needs and wants, as well as fitting around your work, and will ensure that no-one feels pressured or anxious about how much or how little they are doing at home.

A message from Mrs Briggs Hello my wonderful class. How quickly did that half-term pass? It is hard to believe that this is our last week in Year 3. It is now time to take a break from online learning and enjoy the summer holidays ahead. I always feel a little sad at this time of year as I reflect back on how much my class have grown and how much more knowledgeable they have become over our time together. This year has been a little bit strange though and so I am not going to let myself feel sad, instead I am going to look forward to returning to school in September knowing that, at some point, I will get to work with you lovely boys and girls again. As it is our last week together, it is time for us to have some fun. I really hope you enjoy the activities that have been planned this week. Take care everyone. Mrs Briggs x |

Week Seventeen (13/07/2020)
End of term
Throughout the past 4 weeks, since welcoming children back into school, staff have continued to provide learning activities/opportunities for all children working at home, despite also working full time in class with those in school. Further to the letter on the home page of the website, from Mrs Gaughan, we just wanted to re-itterate that, as we move into the last two weeks of the Summer term, the level of work provided via the website will be reduced to reflect the increase in workload for all staff working in school - this includes (but is not limited to) assessments, children's reports and preparations for the full return of all children in September. We know that you will understand this and thank you for your on-going support.
Online Safety
The current situation means that we find ourselves all spending much more time accessing and/or using online platforms and resources in order to do our job, or to support our children with their 'home learning'. This creates additional worries around Online Safety and so we just wanted to point you in the right direction for guidance and advice when it comes to ensuring that both you, and your children, are as safe as can be.
The government has this week released information about keeping children safe online, which you can read here.
The supplementary guidance, specific to 'what you can do to stay safe online', can be read here.
We would also signpost you to our Online Safety page, which has a wealth of information on it. Click here.
Remember - You CAN do any of the activities from previous weeks as well, if you didn't get chance.

It is now possible to upload work done at home on to Purple Mash for it to be looked at. It is not necessary to upload every document although you are more than welcome to do this.
To upload onto Purple Mash
Sign onto Purple Mash and click on the ‘Work Tab’. Select ‘Upload’ and upload the file into the ‘My Work’ folder. Rename the document so that it has your child’s name followed by the relevant day so that I know what work I am looking at. Finally, copy the document into the following folder CLASS / 3 / Share folder. If you have any problems with this process, let me know.
Please also let me know if you need to move up TT Rockstars (send me a message on the discussion board 😊). Why not try to challenge someone in the class……you can always use a multiplication grid to help you if you need it!
Don't forget that there are also some great resources, including daily lessons, on BBC Bitesize now - Click here - as well as on the new Oak National Academy website - Click here.

Refresh: Grid multiplication, Division by chunking on a number line
Intro: Division by chunking – bus stop method
Lesson 1 – Grid multiplication
A few weeks ago we started to learn about grid multiplication. If you need a refresher, please click here ‘Grid Multiplication’.
Task: Complete questions on ‘Grid multiplication Sheet 1’ and ‘Grid multiplication Sheet 2’. Do not spend more than half an hour, it is not necessary to complete both sheets.
Extension: Want an extra challenge – create some of your own grid multiplication questions 😊
Lesson 2 – Understanding inverse
Inverse is a word that we have used a lot in maths – can you tell your adult what we mean by the word ‘inverse’? Look the word up in a dictionary and check your understanding.
Task: Download ‘Understanding inverse’ – See if you can find the inverse number sentences for each of the questions.
Lesson 3 – Using known multiplication facts
I know that lots of you have been practising your times tables on TT Rockstars. Keep it up – this knowledge will help you lots in future maths work, particularly in Year 4.
Set a timer for 30minutes and have a go at one of the challenge sheets below. It is fine to start swap between challenges if you are finding it either too easy or too hard.
It is also okay for you to use a multiplication grid if there are tables that you are not secure on
Task: : Download ‘Quick Division challenge A’ or ‘Quick Division challenge B’ (extra challenge ‘Quick Division challenge C’’
Lesson 4 – Division by chunking (using a number line)
Watch: ‘Division by chunking on a number line’ video
Task: Have a go at the questions on ‘Division by chunking using a number line’ download
Although there is an answer box on the sheet, I would really like to see your working out so make sure you use another piece of paper to draw your number lines!
Lesson 5 – Division by chunking (bus stop method)
Watch: ‘Division by chunking multiple methods’ video
Task: Click on ‘Division by chunking – bus stop’. Have a go at questions 1-9, if you feel confident, try the extension activity.

Tasks:
Day 1
Chapter 19 sees Charlie and the other winners travelling down a chocolate river and arriving at the Inventing Room. Your task is to invent your own sweet or chocolate bar. I am expecting a coloured drawing of your sweet. I would like you to label the different features of your invention making sure you include a description of what impact it has on the eater. I would like you to include further details such as what it smells like and feels like as well as what it tastes like. Happy inventing 😊
Day 2
On their journey around the Chocolate Factory, the group saw many different rooms. Mike TV got particularly excited at the thought of a TV room. I would like you to use your imagination and write a story about an adventure that could happen if you visited the TV room. This is a 2 day activity. On day 1, I would like you to plan the adventure.
Download the ‘Story plan board’ – I am expecting coloured pictures as well as a brief description to explain what will be happening in this part of the story.
Day 3
Using your storyboard, I would like you to write the story. Write it in the first person (as if you are the person having the adventure).
How many of these challenges can you include:
1) Prepositions (eg, above, below, beside, next to, near to, in front of etc)
2) Expanded noun phrases 😊
3) Direct speech
4) A sentence that starts with an adverb
5) Wide range of conjunctions that include – since, although, while
Day 4 (and 5) Something different……
This time last year, you were preparing to move to Year 3. Can you remember what you felt like? Were you at all nervous? I would like to prepare some information for next year’s Class 3 so that they know what to expect in September.
Task : Write a letter addressed to ‘Year 2’. In the letter, I would like you to include the following…a)A paragraph describing how you felt about moving to Year 3. Remember to explain why you were feeling that way (for example: you may have felt worries that the work was going to be way too hard, or you may have be scared of the teacher – although I really hope not as ALL teachers are there to help you learn).
b)Include a paragraph about some of the things that you have done in Year 3 that you really enjoyed. Perhaps you could tell them some of the things that you have learnt.
c)Include a paragraph about how the children can manage any worries that they have. Think about what we do in class – we talk to an adult if we are worried, we can write a note for the teacher, we practice our relaxation techniques.
Upload your letters on Purple Mash and I will send some on to Mr Bass to help him prepare his current class for their move to Class 3.
Day 5
Create a poster showing some of the things that you have enjoyed doing in Year 3.
History
Continue your learning about the Stone Age by choosing one or two more activities from the
‘Stone Age activities jigsaw’
Art
Create an illustration to accompany your work in English.
Computing
Continue working through the 'coding' unit.
Our focus is on computer coding. On Purple Mash head to the ‘Computing’ section. Work your way through the coding challenges set in the ‘Chimp’ section.
If you get stuck on the challenges – take the ‘hint’ option. This will unlock a video for you to watch.
Music
Hopefully you will all have received an email on the PurpleMash platform inviting you to log on to our music scheme ‘Charanga YUMU’. On YUMU, you have been allocated a package to work through as part of your music provision – ‘Bringing us together’. Going forwards, I would like you to work through the different lessons in this unit, one or two per week.
I have also allocated some other packages that I thought might be of interest. These include a singing package and learning guides for the guitar, keyboard and recorder. I know that some of you have these instruments at home already.
Please log on to Charanga YUMU, make sure you let me know if you have any problems with this. It would be lovely to hear your thoughts on this new provision, maybe you could leave me a message on our discussion board….. www.georgefenthamschool.co.uk/year-3-discussion-board.html
Task: Work through the lessons on Charanga YUMU – Bringing us together unit.
Mindfulness
Task
Lie down somewhere comfy and imagine there is a balloon in your tummy. As you breathe in, imagine the balloon slowly inflates. As you breathe out, the balloon effortlessly deflates. Children can rest their favourite toy on their tummy and let them go along for a calming ride.
Science
This week in Science, we are looking further into the role that muscles play in our body.
Watch: www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zpp6n39
Find out what you already know about muscles - have a go at the quiz here www.educationquizzes.com/ks2/science/muscles/
(I know we have only just started learning about muscles so do not expect that you will get all the answers correct. However, it is a good quiz because it explains the answers to you which will help in your understanding of muscles).
Task: Research facts about muscles. Create a poster that includes some of the facts that you have found out. There are some good sites below for you to look at.

Week Fifteen (29/06/2020)
General

Tasks:
Task: I would like you to first draw your own version of Willy Wonka’s Factory. You will then need to label its key features (eg, small windows, bricks, smoke, chimney, iron gate etc). As always, you are then going to push yourselves a little bit further 😊. For each of your labels, I would like you to make them more interesting by creating noun phrases or even (drumroll) expanded noun phrases…..Eg, chimney
= tall chimney noun phrase
= tall, narrow chimney even better noun phrase but be careful not to have more than two adjectives before the noun.
= Charlie gazed up at the tall, narrow chimney which was bellowing out puffs of grey chocolate smelling smoke. Super duper expanded noun phrase 😊
Days 4 & 5
In Chapter 15, we are introduced to the Chocolate Room.
Watch : www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIYNk4ARUR8 (I love this bit!).
Today you are going to plan your own chocolate room
Task: Download the ‘English – five senses Chocolate Room’. Close your eyes and picture yourself walking in your own chocolate room. Think about what you would be walking on and what could it be made out of. What might you see/hear/taste. Let your imagination go wild here.
Task: Recreate your own chapter called ‘The Chocolate Room’.
The emphasis for this writing is on using description to paint a picture in the mind of the reader.
Extension: Now reread your work, can it be improved. Use your work to create a sketch, Quentin Blake style, for Art.

Task
For one minute, see how many star jumps you can do. As soon as you have finished, lie down and place your hand on your heart. Close your eyes and feel your heart beating. Using the deep breathing technique (breath in and out for the count of 5), feel how your heart rate settles.
Science
In Science we have been learning about the skeleton. I am hoping that you can now tell me some of the purposes of our skeletons. If you are reading this with an adult, tell them what our skeleton is for! (In case you need a reminder - some of the purposes are support, protection and movement). The skeleton does other things as well but in Year 3 these are the purposes that we need to remember.
This week in Science, we are going to look at how the skeleton helps us to move. Have you ever wondered why we have so many bones? I’d like you to spread out your fingers, stretch them as far as you can, now without moving or bending your fingers I’d like you to try and pick up something small. Tricky isn’t it?
Your challenge this week is to attempt to make a robotic hand. I’ve included some instructions to help you with this. In the picture below, the young scientist has managed to make a robotic hand that she is able to control as she has attached her finger strings to rings that she is able to move. I would like you to do the same with the robotic hand that you make. My hint for this task is to use sturdy carboard and to draw around an adult hand as this will make the task easier.
Perhaps you could send me a photograph of you giving me a wave with your robotic hand!

Tasks:
- Draw and label a picture of Violet Beauregarde and Mike Teavee. From what we have been told so far about these two characters, what can we deduce about the kind of characters that they are. I am expecting at least five points about each of the children. For example; For Violet I am going to deduce that she is: kind, thoughtful, sporty, well-spoken and generous (now I know that she most probably isn’t any of these things but I’m not going to be nice and do the work for you now am I?). From the words that you have chosen, use a thesaurus and find better, more interesting words that you could use.
- In Chapters 10 and 11, something very exciting happens to Charlie. Imagine that you are the first news reporter on the scene at the shop when Charlie finds the golden ticket. Write a news report Charlie’s lucky find. Remember to include all the key facts as you will want your readers to firstly feel sorry for Charlie because he is very poor before celebrating with Charlie because he found the golden ticket. To present this – you can either hand write this and upload a photograph or scan onto Purple Mash or you could use the ‘Blank Newspaper’ template that I have set as a 2Do. Your choice 😊
- In Chapter 13, Charlie makes his way to Willy Wonka’s factory. Can you imagine how Charlie is feeling as he walks in through the open gate? He will see parts of the factory today that he has never seen before. Your task today is to describe the factory. Look at ‘Willy Wonka’s Factory’ powerpoint to help you get some ideas. Things to think about: the size of the building, it’s colour, its appearance, what the windows look like.
Task: I would like you to first draw your own version of Willy Wonka’s Factory. You will then need to label its key features (eg, small windows, bricks, smoke, chimney, iron gate etc). History
For our learning about the Stone Age, we have looked at the different time periods of the Stone Age era from early Stone Age, Paleolithic, to Iron Age. We have looked at how people lived, what they ate and have seen how society evolved. For the next few weeks I would like you to choose an element of the Stone Age that you are interested in and do some self-research. To help you with this task, I have produced a jigsaw (similar to the Ancient Egypt homework jigsaw that you had at the beginning of Year 3). Choose one or two activities each week. Once an activity is complete, take a photo or scan your work and upload it to Purple Mash.

Art
Create an illustration to accompany your work on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Computing
For the next six weeks, our focus will be on computer coding.
Mindfulness
Sit on the floor in a comfortable position. Close your eyes and take some slow deep breaths in and out. Picture a bright, shining sun smiling at you. Feel the sun on your face. Breathe slowly and let the sun warm your face. Imagine the sun warming your shoulders and back. Imagine the sun warming your arms. Continue to breathe in and out slowly and calmly. Imagine the sun’s warmth spreading to your legs. Finally, feel the warmth all the way in your fingers and toes. Slowly stretch your arms overhead and your legs and feet out in front of you. Take a deep breath in and bend over towards your feet. Slowly exhale and sit back up. Take one more breath in and out and slowly open your eyes.

Tasks:
- Draw and label a picture of one of Charlie’s grandparents. You will need to listen or read carefully the opening paragraphs of Chapter 2 as this will give you lots of information about what Charlie’s grandparents look like. Remember to LABEL your picture to show which of the author’s description you are using.
- We all know that the workers in Mr Wonka’s Chocolate Factory are called Oompa-Loompas. Create your own mystery worker. Draw a picture of your worker and explain why you have given them the features that you have. For example, my worker is small so that he doesn’t have to stoop to get past windows. My worker has large ears so that he can hear if humans get close so that he can hide. Remember, it is the detail that you provide that help your readers to understand your character.
- Imagine you are Willy Wonka. You want to invite five lucky children to your factory. Make your own golden ticket. Your golden ticket should entice children to want to come and visit you. Think about what you could include to advertise how wonderful your factory is. For a good example of a golden ticket, listen carefully to the opening paragraph of Chapter 5.
- In Chapter 7, Charlie has his birthday. For his birthday, he receives one plain chocolate bar. Using your ‘Playscript’ skills from last half-term, create a conversation between Charlie and his grandparents where he is given the chocolate bar and he opens it to find… not a golden ticket. You need to try and convey in your playscript the initial excitement that is felt by all and the disappointment in not having a golden ticket. You are trying to create empathy from your reader.
- Draw a picture to go with your playscript above.

This week our story of James and the Giant Peach should reach its conclusion!
Episode 9 www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8GhT2g9bn0
Episode 10 – the final chapter has not yet been released but is due to be broadcast this week – keep checking!!
This week in English, we are going to write our own version of James and the Giant Peach. We are going to use the same model that we would in our English lessons if we were in the classroom and I will model this for you through the videos below.
You can ether write this on paper and upload it onto Purple Mash after or you could type your story and email it to me or, if you are feeling adventurous, you could create your own chapter book on Purple Mash ‘2Do – Blank chapter book’.
Tasks
1 – Download ‘English Storyboard’. Plan your story by writing ideas for each of the sections on the storyboard. To help, I have given you an example on sheet 2 (you can use some of my ideas if you like them but must put some ideas in of your own).
2 – Today we are going to start writing our own alternative book to James and the Giant Peach. You will do this in two parts – firstly by pulling your ideas into a draft paragraph, then improving your paragraph to produce your best work.
This is modelled in the video click here ‘James and the Giant Peach alternative story’.
Using the storyboard from yesterday, write an opening paragraph introducing your character (box 1) and the setting (box 2).
Expected: writing should include adjectives.
Challenge: include noun phrases and expanded noun phrases.
3 – Continuing our story, today we are focusing on introducing our fruit. Using the same format as yesterday (creating a draft paragraph and improving it to produce a final paragraph) include as much detail as you can so that your reader can imagine being inside the giant fruit.
Expected: writing should include adjectives. Include references to what you can hear and smell.
Challenge: Include adverbs (eg, Jane quietly crept into the living room). Extend sentences by using conjunctions such as ‘although’, ‘so’ and ‘since’.
4 – Today’s focus will be on writing an exciting paragraph explaining how the fruit begins its magical journey, again drafting and improving your paragraph.
Expected: Include adverbs (quickly, slowly, quietly etc).
Challenge: Include speech (using inverted commas for speech).
Include a command sentence (Hold on to the ladder.)
5 – Today we will work on the ‘adventure and ending’ of our story. Make sure you are following your story plan!
Expected: Paint the scene inside your readers head – include lots of detail.
Challenge: Make writing interesting by using exciting vocabulary.

Science
Weekly focus: To explore the human skeleton (two week assignment) – WEEK 2
What do you know about the human skeleton?
Over the next two weeks, I would like you to produce a life size poster of the main bones within the human body (these should include the head, shoulders, arms, ribs, spine, hips, legs, toes and fingers). Your poster can be as detailed as you like should you want to go into greater detail. Make it interesting by adding ‘did you know’ facts.
Once you have produced your poster, lay it flat and ask an adult to photograph different sections. These photographs should be uploaded onto Purple Mash. Keep hold of the poster until we return to school.
RE (Mrs Chamberlain)
This half-term we’re learning about pilgrimages and important places of worship. We’re starting with Canterbury Cathedral which is the Mother Church of the worldwide Anglican (C of E) community. There’s lots of interesting information on the Canterbury Cathedral website and some lovely pictures too. Please do some independent research (remembering our online safety rules) and see what you can find out about the Cathedral, for example where is Canterbury, when was the cathedral built, who leads the worship and what famous things have happened there?

French (Mrs Chamberlain)
Let’s revise some of the basic greetings we learned at the beginning of the year:
Hello – Bonjour
Hi! – Salut!
Goodbye – Au revoir
Good night - Bonne nuit
PE
Local schools have started competing in a virtual games challenge and we would really like our school to get involved. On the main school Home Page you will find a link to PE Provision. (It’s right at the top) Click on and register for the School Games.
This week’s virtual games challenge is BASKETBALL and we would really like you to get involved. This link BASKETBALL CHALLENGE shows you what to do and how to enter. You will also find this information on the PE Provision during COVID 19 page at the top of the main school home page.
Come on you can do it! We’d love to see your name on the weekly championship table!!
Week Twelve (08/06/2020)

Recap: division, mental addition and subtraction, column addition and problem solving
Lesson 1 – Backwards multiplication
Recap that division is the inverse of multiplication.
Task: Purple Mash – ‘2Do Su2Wk1 L1 backward multiplication’
Questions 1 – 9 should be done by all.
Questions 10+ are the mega-challenge questions!!
Lesson 2 – Adding by selecting an appropriate mental strategy (counting on, rounding, nearest 10, number bonds, place value)
Today children will recap on their addition skills. I have created a task on PurpleMash where I would like them to try, if they can, to explain how they solved some of the calculations. An example will be given. The emphasis is on mental addition, however, if your child finds this tricky it is absolutely fine for them to use pencil and paper to help them work out the answer.
Note: I haven’t worked out yet how to allow the children to enter a sentence without it appearing as if it is incorrect – I am working on this but in the meantime please tell your child that their answer is not wrong. Sorry – I am trying to use best fit resources and adapt them to what I need them to be.
Task: Purple Mash – ‘2Do Su2Wk1 L1 addition’
Lesson 3
Watch: the video ‘Pupil video 3.25 Adding 3-digit numbers using a written method’ on the ‘My Stuff’ area on ‘Active Learn’ www.activelearnprimary.co.uk/home#my_stuff
Task: Click on ‘Su2Wk1 L3 addition no carrying’ and have a go at the questions.
Lesson 4 – Column addition with regrouping
Watch: www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zy2mn39/articles/z3kmrwx
Today we are taking our learning a little further by looking at numbers that bridge ten where we need to ‘carry’ a number into the next column.
Task: Click on ‘Su2Wk1 L4 addition with carrying’
Lesson 5 – Bringing it altogether
Task: Download the homework sheet (click here) ‘Su2Wk1 – addition consolidation’.
Read the instructions carefully. Once the work has been completed, take a photo or scan the sheet and upload it onto Purple Mash.
Just for fun extension – On the ActiveLearn platform, play the game ‘Starfish Strike’

Computing
Continue working your way through the touch-typing unit using the 2Type application on Purple Mash. If you have been practising this regularly, you should now find that your fingers are beginning to develop a memory of where some of the letters are. Being able to type accurately and quickly is a great skill to develop.
Task: Throughout the half-term, work your way through the unit.
Music
Hopefully you will all have received an email on the PurpleMash platform inviting you to log on to our music scheme ‘Charanga YUMU’.
General

As yet the links for episode 4 and 5 have not yet been posted. However I am hoping by the time you read this, the links will be available on YouTube and should be easily found when watching one of the above links. For this week, I would like you to listen up to and including Episode 5.
Tasks:
- Draw and label a picture for Aunt Spike and Aunt Sponge.
- Create your own insect character. Draw and label it and write a character description to tell me what your character is like.
- Instead of a peach, what other fruit could grow and grow? Design your own fruit that will next week take you on an adventure. Think about what rooms it could contain and what features might be useful on an adventure.
- Using your ‘Playscript’ skills from last half-term, choose 3 other characters and James and write a playscript for the scene where James meets the insects inside your new fruit. (You can change the character James to be yourself if you like).

Week Ten - Half Term (25/05/2020)
It has been an incredibly hard couple of months for everyone, in whatever capacity, therefore we are not setting any directed work or activities for you over what would have been the half term break. This is a conscious decision to enable you, your parents and the staff to stop, take a break, relax, regroup and refresh before we begin again at the start of June, in whatever format that may take, based on the latest Government guidance.
If you would like to carry on and complete some activities during this time, please scroll back and do some of the activities set previously if you didn't manage them at the time, or you can use some of the wonderful online resources that we signposted for you right at the start of this period - these links are all at the bottom of this page. There is also educational provision being offered through:
- JIGSAW PSHE: A link to the 'Calm Me' audio file that we would use within the classroom to support the children with Mindfulness.
- BBC Bitesize: A range of different resources, lessons and activities aimed at specific age ranges.
- Department for Education recommended online provision list.
- Oak National Academy: An online portal providing virtual lessons (DfE recommended).
- Robin Hood Academy: An academy in our region providing a range of online learning resources and projects.
From Monday, 1st June we will resume posting online resources to support you, and your child/ren, with 'Home Learning', however the format this takes will begin to evolve from that point onwards, to reflect our increasing 'in-school' provision.
Have a good week.

Pictograms, reading tally charts, weight in g and kg
Lesson 1 – Draw and interpret pictograms where one symbol represents two units
Powerpoint : Click on the powerpoint ‘L1 Pictogram powerpoint and tasks’
The powerpoint takes you through how to create pictograms. Slides 6-9 are tasks for you to complete at home.
Task 1: Create a pictogram from given information with a scale of 1.
Task 2: Create a pictogram from given information with a scale of 2 (even numbers)
Task 3: Create a pictogram from given information with a scale of 2 (odd numbers)
Task 4: Create your own pictogram
Lesson 2 – Interpreting pictograms.
Task – On PurpleMash – select ‘2Do Pictogram puzzle’.. Can you interpret the pictograms?
Lesson 3 – To compare and measure weights in grams and kilogram
For this lesson, you will need some kitchen scales.
Your first task is to find several items of food. From your kitchen cupboards select one of the following items: a packet mix (I used cous cous), a piece of fruit, a potato, a tin of beans, a bag of sugar or flour, pasta and a packet of crisps.
Once you have your selected food items, I would like you to hold them and see if you can put them into order of weight from lightest to heaviest. Next weight each item on the scales and make a note of how many grams they weigh.
Complete the ‘2Do – compare and measure weight in g and kg’ on Purple Mash. Write down the foods in order of lightest to heaviest noting down their weights.
Just for fun – You will need an adult to help you! For the VE day celebrations, I made some delicious chocolate chip muffins. If you have the ingredients, why not try to make these yourself… Make sure you weight out the ingredients carefully!
www.bbcgoodfood.com/user/662219/recipe/chocolate-chip-muffins
Lesson 4 – To know how many grams are in a kilogram
Following on from yesterday’s lesson – today we are going to focus on understanding that a kilogram is made up of 1000 grams.
Take a look in your kitchen food cupboards and see if you have a vegetable or food item that you have lots of that you can weigh – for example, potatoes. Place one potato onto the scales and make a note of its weight. Now add a second potato, again making a note of the new weight. Keep on adding potatoes until you have reached 1000g or just over. Every time you add a potato, make a note of the new weight.
Now choose a second item and the steps above.
Complete the ‘2Do – weighing in g to a kilogram’ on Purple Mash.
Lesson 5 – To read scales in g and kg.
I have digital scales in my kitchen and I can imagine that lots of you probably have the same. However, it is important that we can also read analogue scales. Reading analogue scales though can be a little tricky as the scales don’t usually increase in 1s – this is where you need to use your place value skills and think about what the numbers could be in between the numbers that are shown on the scale.

Can you draw the scenes for the play?
Can you draw a picture of the characters?
Can you act out the play and make a voice recording for other people to listen to? Perhaps you could send it to me!
I can’t wait to see your playscript and enjoy all of your creativity.

Task 2: On Purple Mash, take the quiz….. ‘2Do Multiply and divide by 10 and 100’
Lesson 2 – Grid multiplication.
Powerpoint : Recap the process of grid multiplication by looking at and talking through the powerpoint ‘Grid multiplication consolidation’
Task – Click on the worksheet/s that you would like to complete. L1 - Challenge 1 (1star) L1 - Challenge 2 (2 stars), L1 - Challenge 3 (how far can you go?..)
Lesson 3 – Use the grid method to multiply 2-digit numbers by 3, 4, 5 and 8, and begin to estimate products
Without working out the answer - what do you think the answer to 3 x 14 would be – 75 or 42? Now use the grid method to work out the actual answer. Did you guess correctly? Think about the skill that you were using to guess the answer. This is where you use your skills to think about what an answer could be.
Task: Click here → ‘Multiplying using estimation’. You will also need a plain piece of paper, scissors and a glue stick. Cut out the question stems and possible answers. Use your estimation skills to match the question stem with what you think the answer could be. Once you have matched these, use grid multiplication to check your answers.
Lesson 4 – Multiplication and division problem solving
Task: Find the missing numbers. Click on ‘L4 – multiplication and division problems’
Lesson 5 – Have fun with multiplication and division.
Play the ‘Multiplication and division game’ (click on the link). You have played a similar game to this lots of time at school so I am hoping you can remember the rules! Work your way from start to finish by selecting a number on each line to answer. Numbers that are underlined should be ‘divided by 10’ , all the other numbers can be multiplied by a one-digit number of your choosing (a good idea is to either pick the times tables that you know or you could use a dice to choose the multiplier).
Just for fun extension – can you design your own multiplication and division game? Make it look good and upload a copy of it on to Purple Mash. I’ll put some of the games in the shared folder so that we can all play them!

Hello Year 3!
Continuing our work on the question: Why do we need faith? I’d like you to think about the story of Moses. He showed great faith in God’s word and led the people of Israel out of slavery. The Israelites found that when they listened to Moses and also trusted in God’s word, he provided food and water for them in the middle of a barren desert. The Israelites called this food manna; it was just like white fluffy seeds and tasted of sweet wafers made with honey. They shared this food and it was important that everyone had enough but not more than their fair share.
I’d like you to have a go at making something this week which you can share with the other members of your household, so that everyone has some and nobody misses out. You might like to bake some biscuits or cakes, make a bookmark for each person living with you at the moment, or you could choose something completely different – it’s up to you! The most important thing is that everyone is included and that you share. If you can take a picture and show me what you’ve shared, on Purple Mash, that would be even better!

Consolidation of multiplication and division.
Lesson 1 – Multiplying and dividing by multiples of 10 and 100
Powerpoint : Click on the powerpoint ‘Multiplying in multiples of 10 and 100
Task 1: Click on the worksheet ‘multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100 worksheet’

Resources for this week
Most of the resources this week should appear in the ‘My Stuff’ area of the ActiveLearn program. Resources include worksheets, blank number lines and games. Some of these you will be able to print out.
The first part of the week will focus on division where numbers divide exactly (no remainders). At this point a specific strategy (ie, chunking/bus stop method) is not being taught (this will come later), I am hoping that children will be able to use their times table knowledge and/or use a numberline. I have included a MULTIPLICATION SQUARE for children to refer to if they have not yet secured the times table in any of the worksheets. I want to encourage their understanding of the process.
Example: 70 ÷ 5 = ? - Children should know that 5x10=50 (jump to 50 on a numberline). From here they will either know that the difference between 70 and 50 is 20 (or 5 x 4 =20) or they can use the number line to jump in groups of 5 from 50 to 70.

Task: Complete the ‘Food Groups’ quiz set as a 2Do on Purple Mash.
History
Week 2 – How did Stone Age hunter-gatherers live? Click on the link below. Watch the video and explore.
History Task: Find out some information about one or two of the animals that lived during the Stone Age (for example: woolly mammoth, sabre-tooth tiger). It is up to you how this is presented, whether it is on paper or if you want to challenge yourself, try using 2Publish or 2Publish Plus on Purple Mash.
Art Task: Stone Age cave painting often used to tell a story of an event that the painter had witnessed. Can you imagine that you are living in the Stone Age and create a cave painting picture of part of your day (perhaps you went hunting and caught a wild hog, or maybe you were part of the group that had to cook the animal). Again you can choose how this is presented but those of you wanting to use technology could perhaps use 2Create a Story on Purple Mash.

RE (Mrs Chamberlain)
Our “Big Question” topic this half term is: “Why do People Need Faith?” We are going to start with a group of Christians called The Gideons. Please find out some information about them and draw me a beautiful picture of their symbol. This is a great opportunity for you to use your independent research skills and there’s lots of information online about them. Some of your older family members may have been visited by The Gideons when they were at school (I was) and they might have been given a special present by them. If you can, please write some sentences underneath your picture about who The Gideons are, what they do and why you think they leave these special presents for people to pick up and read.
Computing
This term our focus in Computing is to learn how to touch type. This will be done on Purple Mash. For those of you with tablets, the easiest way to access this learning is to turn your tablet so that the keyboard is displayed along the length of the screen. The best way to learn how to type is to practise little and often. I would like you to work your way through this unit of work – don’t rush, take your time to make sure you develop good memory recall of where each finger needs to sit on a keyboard.
Watch: The introduction to typing videos on the 2Type application on Purple Mash.
Task: Throughout the half-term, work your way through the unit.
Music
Last half term we looked at different musical terms. Refresh your memory of Rhythm and Pulse by clicking on the link below. Make sure you also watch the performance piece at the bottom of the webpage.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zcbkcj6/articles/z2mqw6f
Task: How can you use your body to create rhythm and pulse? Compose your own body percussion piece of music.
Mindfulness
During our normal day at school we would often have opportunities to reflect on learning or events that have happened. I would like you to use the skills that you have learnt in this reflection to now unwind and deep breath at home.
Task
Lie on your back outside and close your eyes so you can use all of your senses except for sight. Notice the feel of the air, the feel of the ground, the sounds that surround you and any smells that are present. What sounds did you recognise?
Extension
Colour some bunting to decorate your garden or bedroom.
Maths
Daily – 10 minutes of TT Rockstars!
This week’s focus is multiplication and division using the times tables that have been previously covered in class. I have included a MULTIPLICATION SQUARE for children to refer to if they have not yet secured the times table in the worksheet, however they could also have a go at drawing an array to help them to work out the answer.
Lesson 1 - Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10 multiplication tables.
Task: Open the powerpoint by click on the link ‘LESSON 1 – MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION’. Choose either Challenge 1 or Challenge 2. There is an extension activity for those that want to push themselves further. I have included the answers on sheet 4.
Lesson 2 – Inverse facts. Using the website ‘Active Learn’ www.activelearnprimary.co.uk/login?c=0
(we used this last week but to remind you the usernames are the children’s usual George Fentham usernames ie, 73jbloggs, followed by a password which is the first three letters of their surname following by 123 (eg, blo123) with a school code ‘gfes’)
Play the game – Seaside Scuffle a/b/c
Lesson 3 – Keeping with the multiplication and division theme, use your skills to solve the triangle challenge. Open the powerpoint by clicking on the link ‘LESSON 3 – MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION – DIFFERENT CONTEXT’
Lesson 4 – Use your multiplication and division knowledge to solve either challenge 1 or challenge 2 on the worksheet. Open the powerpoint ‘LESSON 4 – MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION – PROBLEM SOLVING’
Lesson 5 – Today we are focusing on multiplication using the grid method. As a starter activity, have a go at the ‘Against the clock’ section of the worksheet (click on) ‘LESSON 5 – MULTIPLICATION USING THE GRID METHOD’.
Once you have finished the starter activity, watch the video ‘Using the grid method to multiply a 2digit number’ this has been saved in the ‘My Stuff’ section in the ‘Active learn’ program. Have a go at the ‘Are you a grid genius’ section of the worksheet.
English
Continuing our learning about ‘Playscripts’.
Lesson 1 – Can you act out the playscript of JACK AND THE BEANSTALK (click on the title to download the document)? You could ask brothers/sisters to help you or even use your Teddies!
Lesson 2 – Last week we looked at features of a playscript and I would like to see these particular features in our playscripts:
· Character list (with short descriptions of each character)
· Scene – a short description of where and when each scene is set
· Stage directions – if a character needs to move, add a bit of detail so the actor knows what to do.
Can you add all three things to the playscript?
Lesson 3 – Can you find someone to act out your uplevelled script? Do they use the stage directions? Are they acting the characters as you imagined?
